  • This is a 6 minute preview of our 38 minute profile of Ampex reel to reel tape recorder. The full version is available both as part of the 3 DVD 7 hour set, downloadable videos from the internet, or bought as an individual video at reel2reeltexas.com/DVDR2RTexas.html.
Folks are familiar with Ampex recorders being used beginning in 1954 at Sun Records to record Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison & Carl Perkins. Ampex became the industry standard. They were also used at Accurate Sound Studio to record the Cavaliers #1 hit "Last Kiss."
We profile the Ampex recorders in our collection beginning with the 1948 Ampex 200A which originally belonged to Capitol Records. This specific Ampex was used to record "Tequila" by the Champs and other hits. Ampex recorders proliferated the recording studio and broadcast markets. Other Ampex units profiled include the 300, 400, 350 (same model as used at Sun Records), AG 440, AG 500, 600, 601-2, 602, 602-2, 300, ATR-800 and several more. There are over 150 reel tape recorders and 100+ microphones in our collection. All are covered as well as the histories of 40+ reel tape recorder companies in our 7 hour production. Included in the 7 hours is the history of Sound Recording and How the Tape Recorder Works. Please go to reel2reeltexas.com/DVDR2RTexas.html and view our trailer.
